Word-of-the-year-Wordle-sfov6j

Last night as I was bringing in groceries through my garage, I looked around and thought, “I need to focus on organizing the garage in the New Year…and the entire house for that matter.”  And then it struck me like a bolt of lightening.  My word for 2013.  FOCUS!  2013 I shall drive everything I do with this one powerful word.

I will FOCUS….

…on my family

…on my friends

…on organizing my home

…on serving others

…on my health

…on saving money

…on my talents and helping my children develop theirs

…on my dreams, hopes and aspirations

…on writing more

…on using my college degree to help others

…on being supportive of my husband and his career goals

…on reading more

…on learning a new skill or two

…on being positive and choosing happiness always.

I could sit here for hours listing all the wonderful things I can focus on throughout 2013 so that I can get the most out of life and live it to the fullest.  I like the idea of choosing one word to drive my actions rather than setting New Year’s Resolutions year after year.  So much can be done with just one little word and perhaps be more effective than setting countless goals. Because more often than not, by February 1st, they are forgotten and personally, I’m back to doing the same old things.  At least by sharing with all of you what my word is, placing it in a highly visible place to see every day and encouraging my family to come up with words of their own to guide them through 2013, it will keep me on my toes.   On my toes to stay focused on all those things that are of importance in my life and will ultimately bring both me and my family optimal happiness.

For Christmas I bought the book, The Happiness Project by the very talented author, Gretchen Ruben.  I haven’t really read it yet. I’ve just quickly browsed through it. But I can’t wait to pick it up and devour the words on those pages.  The author has a great blog, The Happiness Project {which inspired her New York Times Best Seller}. I encourage you to go check it out.  It’s the perfect place to get motivated for the New Year, whether it’s by setting personal goals for yourself or selecting a meaningful word to motivate you to live your best life possible.  And in the process, finding genuine happiness along the way.

I love seeing what words others choose for the New Year. There is a very talented graphic designer and creative genius I follow on Instagram, Rhonna Farrer {check out her blog here or her website here for even more inspiration}.  She made an entire Smash book dedicated to everything she does throughout 2013 with her word of the year, Strong.

59646c7a523e11e2ab9022000a9f14bb_7I think it’s a great idea! I may just do the same as a way of journaling all those things I choose to FOCUS on throughout the coming year.

What will drive you through 2013? I’d love to hear.
