A Super Spontaneous Summer Synopsis

Summer is officially over.  Sadly.  We savored every last second!

Our summer was perfect.  We went to bed late.  Woke up late.  We filled our days with as much fun as we possibly could. Our Summer 2012 Bucket List hung on our fridge for all to see.  There wasn’t a chance at boredom. At least that’s what I hoped for. And that was our goal. I think it’s safe to say, we succeeded!  The kids seemed content, no matter what it was we were doing. Whether it was a lazy day at home or adventured filled.

Summer was chock-full of great moments together! We went to Disneyland~

the San Diego Zoo~

and Sea World.

We went to Dodger Baseball games,

had slumber parties with friends, saw several movies at the theater, and went to cool tech camps at colleges.

The kids spent countless hours frolicking in the pool…

and visited picturesque places like Balboa Island…

Old Town Temecula….

and scenic Zion National Park.

We even hosted a memorable Cowgirl Birthday party for a very special little girl.

I love carefree summer days and I will miss them now that school has started. I hope that as my kids get older and look back on their childhood summers they will be filled with fabulous memories.

Yes, despite the hot temperatures, I love summer.  I adore the freedoms that come with each day. The spontaneity. Where you wake up and say, “Huh? What shall will we do today?”  Sometimes my children and I just stay in our PJs all day long and do absolutely nothing.  Or we throw on our swimsuits and go for a dip in the pool to cool off.  Better yet, perhaps we decide to go somewhere we’ve never been. Exploring. That’s always entertaining!
Regardless of what it is we set out to do each day, I cherish these moments I get to spend with my children.
Because, one summer day, in the not-so-distant future, I’ll wake-up to find  them heading to jobs where they are being taught important life skills.  And then shortly thereafter, off to college they will go. There will be no more carefree summers.  Taking kids to the beach.

Hosting sleepovers.  Visiting magnificent museums. Running through the sprinklers and gliding super fast down slip ‘n slides with friends.

Well, maybe we’ll still do that, but it will be a bit different, I’m sure.

Summer is special. Rules get tossed out the window.  Bed time is later and we sleep in. We eat ice cream for dinner.

And we spend way too much time watching mindless television.

Needless to say, I hope when that day comes, when it’s time for my children to fly-the-coop, they’ll walk away with a few fond childhood summer memories.  You know….memories of the great summer camps they went to. The late nights watching movies cuddled together on the couch.  Pancake breakfasts and eating brunch at darling diners after sleeping in until it’s almost lunch time!

Going to the beach where we collect shells, explore tide pools, body surf and build sandcastles.

Our adventures to the State Fair to play all the silly games, eat crazy calorie-filled fair food and watch squealing pigs races.  Then there’s the spectacular road trips to visit family or explore new places.

And camping in the wilderness where we star-gaze under a clear, dark, summer night’s sky and make s’mores.  These are the things we look forward to with excitement as summer rolls around each year. And these are the summer traditions I hope they remember fondly and share with families of their own someday.

Until that not-so-distant day arrives, I’m going to savor our splendid spontaneous summers.  Doing all these things we love. Together.

Because that’s what it’s all about. Togetherness.
